Application Logistics

Apply to SF State via Cal State Apply

No School of Music audition is required for the BA in Music

Placement Evaluations

Incoming BA students are recommended (not required) to take Music Theory, Ear Training, and Piano placement evaluations the Thursday before classes begin — for course placement only, not admission

Students may enroll in MUS 130 instead of taking the Theory and Ear Training evaluations

Optional Audition

Students who want applied private lessons must submit a video audition (or a portfolio for composition); private lessons are not guaranteed to BA students

Applicants who submit a video audition are also automatically considered for music scholarships

Transfer Pathway

California community-college students with an AA-T in Music have a published two-year ADT roadmap and, after verification of the similar-major ADT, are guaranteed completion of the BA in 60 additional units.
