Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Songs

MTCP Song Option B

Two Contrasting Songs, 60-90 Sec Each

One musical theater song from any time period

One song of your choice in any style (pop, hip-hop, folk, rock, rap, soul, country, punk, etc.)

Should contrast the style of the first selection (fast vs slow, belt vs head/falsetto, dramatic vs comedic)

Must sing to musical accompaniment — no a cappella

Accompaniment tracks available on YouTube or apps like Harmony Helper

Monologues

MTCP Monologue Option A

One Monologue, 60-90 Sec

From a published play or written by a professional writer

Active monologues recommended — real-time communication with an imaginary scene partner

Avoid pieces that rely on extreme emotions

Application Logistics

Admission requires both Cal State Apply and the Acceptd video audition

Select Pre-Major as Musical Theatre (662509) on Cal State Apply

The Fall 2027 university application opens August 1 and may be submitted October 1–November 30

The latest published artistic requirements use the Musical Theater Common Prescreen; the next Acceptd cycle is not yet open

Applicants may also request consideration for BA Theatre Arts (Performance) through the combined Acceptd option

Fall enrollment only

Students denied admission cannot reapply until the following academic year

Audition Process

SDSU uses a video-only Acceptd audition and does not offer a live undergraduate audition

Choose the BA Musical Theatre-only option, or the combined Theatre Arts Performance/Musical Theatre option

The Acceptd portal is currently closed; the next supplemental submission dates have not been published
