Training
•Bullet: Associate in Arts serving students who want to explore and expand their knowledge, performance skills, and appreciation of music, with a 39-unit area of emphasis
•Bullet: Core coursework covers the Musicianship series (Music 2, 3, 4) and the Harmony and Analysis sequence (Music 6, 7, 8), preceded by Music 1 or 66 (Fundamentals) and Music 5 recommended
•Bullet: Students choose one of two pathways to the same AA Music award: an Applied Music track with four semesters of performance ensembles plus four semesters each of Applied Instruction (Music 92) and Concert Music Class (Music 94), or a General Music track with a minimum of 8 ensemble units plus electives in theory, history, conducting, voice, piano, guitar, and instrumental technique
•Bullet: A piano proficiency requirement (two courses from the elementary/intermediate sequence) applies unless waived by audition
Performance & Productions
•Bullet: Ensemble options include SMC Choirs, the SMC Symphony Orchestra, SMC Vocal Jazz, the SMC Wind Ensemble, and the SMC Jazz Ensemble, plus the Friday Night Jazz Series and regular student recitals
Facilities
•Bullet: Music instruction is based in the Performing Arts Center, home to the Music Hall and the Eli and Edythe Broad Stage, with student practice rooms and storage lockers
