Audition Requirements

Songs

Two Song Cuts

Prepare two contrasting 40-60 second, 32-bar cuts from published musicals

For virtual submissions, include one uptempo and one ballad

Monologues

Two Contrasting Monologues

Prepare two contrasting memorized monologues

Each monologue should be 60-90 seconds

Total monologue package must be no longer than 3 minutes

At least one monologue must be from a contemporary script

Dance

Dance Call

In-person applicants participate in a dance call

Virtual Musical Theatre applicants submit a dance video up to 1 minute

Dance video should demonstrate your best dance abilities

Wildcard Video

Required for performance video submissions

Showcase your personality and authenticity

Suggested topics include why you want to perform professionally, what you enjoy outside performing, or how you express your true essence in daily life

SHSU's audition registration form posts the current deadlines and program-specific requirements

University application via Common App, ApplyTexas, or SHSU website

Live-audition materials are due by 5:00pm on Monday of the audition week

Late materials roll to the next in-person audition/interview date when available

Audition Process

Recorded or virtual audition review is available for applicants who cannot attend an in-person date

Faculty review virtual submissions and respond by email

Audition Expectations

In-person auditions run 2:00pm-6:00pm at University Theatre Center

All Musical Theatre applicants should plan to stay until 6:00pm

In-person audition includes two monologues, two song cuts, and a dance call

All audition days include an informational session with Theatre and Musical Theatre faculty

Post-Enrollment

Musical Theatre majors complete a Sophomore Gate assessment interview at the end of sophomore year

Transfer students complete the review at the end of their first year at SHSU
