THREE CONTRASTING SONGS (ALL MEMORIZED)

•At least one must be in a foreign language

•Select from age and ability-appropriate literature: art song, oratorio/sacred music, opera, and/or musical theater

•Accompanist provided by SU; you may bring your own

Program Requirements

•All music courses must be completed with grades of C or better

•Minimum 2.5 GPA in music major courses

•Must demonstrate 102-level proficiency in a foreign language

•Piano proficiency exam required

•Must be enrolled in ensembles every semester

•Junior half-recital and senior full-recital required

Important Notes

•$200 per semester credit lab fee for applied music study

•Additional lab fees for MUSA, MUSC, and MUMT courses

•Music audition required for admission to BA Music program

•Theory Advisory Test also required

•Rolling audition process; strongly urged to complete by March 1

•Must be completed by March 15 for incoming music student scholarship consideration

•Be prepared to sight-read and interview with faculty

Pre-Music Major Option

•Students who do not pass the initial audition may enter as pre-music majors

•Pre-music majors take applied voice lessons for one semester to prepare for a second audition

•Can take music theory, history, and other courses during pre-major period

•May add an extra semester or two to degree timeline

How to Prepare

•Vocal study with a teacher focused on healthy technique and appropriate repertoire is highly recommended

•Study piano (keyboard skills required for all music majors)

•Study Italian, French, German, or Spanish (main languages for undergraduate vocal study)
