Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Songs

Two Contrasting Vocal Selections (from Memory)

Choose two of: musical theatre repertoire; classical repertoire in English, a traditional folk song, or spiritual; classical repertoire in a language other than English

Songs must be performed from memory

Additional Materials

Repertoire List (Required)

Bring an updated list of repertoire studied

Include titles, opus numbers/keys, composers, significant technical studies, recent performances, and teachers' names

Pianists: prepare two memorized works from contrasting style periods at least late-intermediate in difficulty

Instrumentalists: prepare two selections in contrasting styles, such as one technical and one lyrical

Program Requirements

Students select Music Performance or Music Studies at the end of the second semester

Music Performance is limited to students whose applied area is voice or piano

Important Notes

Performance students work toward junior and senior recitals

All admitted music majors receive the Father Guentner Award covering applied lesson fees

Music majors complete the piano proficiency exam by the end of junior year as a curriculum requirement, not an admissions gateway

Transfer Pathway

SLU's STLCC 2+SLU program plan for Music, B.A. places STLCC transfer students directly into Year Three (junior-year) SLU coursework after they complete an outlined 60-credit, two-year sequence at St. Louis Community College with at least a 2.50 cumulative GPA.

What's The Process

Audition Process

All prospective music majors must pass an entrance audition before declaring the music major

Campus auditions are scheduled by contacting Music Program Director Aaron Johnson, DMA at aaron.johnson@slu.edu

Students may also submit a digital audition by file-sharing service or via Acceptd

Digital auditions should not be edited or enhanced with reverb or other effects

Live or virtual auditions must be completed or submitted by March 1 for music scholarship consideration

Music Talent Scholarship

Awarded to music majors based on performing ability and promise

Renewable annually with a successful audition and steady progress toward the degree

Requires ensemble membership each semester, recital/event attendance, departmental service, and a minimum 3.0 GPA in music coursework

Father Guentner Award

Covers applied music lesson fees for admitted music majors

Renewable annually with the same music-major standing requirements
