Rehearsal
•Candidates rehearse with the rhythm section for 30 minutes before the audition
•The candidate is expected to lead the rehearsal, with rhythm-section guidance available
Audition Process
•Entry to the BMus (Hons) Jazz is by audition only
•Applicants demonstrate general musical knowledge and musicianship, including harmony and aural skills
•The panel may request sight-reading, keyboard, aural, or interactive tests if more evidence is needed
•Candidates must improvise for the majority of the performance
•Bring charts for each band member if the free-choice piece is not from RBC's listed standards
•Non-drummer/non-vocalist applicants should provide a PDF copy of their transcription for the audition panel
•Face-to-face auditions take place at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire; virtual auditions begin with a recording submission and may lead to a Teams or Zoom interview
Interview
•Informal interview covers knowledge of the music, artistic influences, inspiration to be a jazz musician, and career objectives
•Applicants can ask questions about the Jazz Department and life as a musician in Birmingham
