Audition Requirements

Repertoire List

Prepare as repertoire the melody to Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee" from beginning to end without stopping; you select the tempo (memorization is not required)

Prepare as repertoire the melody and at least two improvised choruses on Duke Ellington's "Take the A Train" in concert C; accompaniment is provided and you select the tempo

Guitarists and pianists should also be prepared to comp one chorus of the chord changes; bassists should be prepared to walk one chorus

Jazz Drums: demonstrate swing time at various tempos with sticks and brushes, a Latin feel (bossa, samba, or mambo), and play/trade/solo over the form of a standard from a provided list (e.g. Autumn Leaves, Satin Doll, Take the A Train)

Repertoire may include selected sight-reading examples (single-line snare etude for drum applicants)

Audition Process

Acceptance is based on a performance audition plus tests of musical ability

Upload audition materials through the Applicant Status Portal in the Digital Submission section by the deadline

Students may request a one-on-one audition by contacting the Audition Coordinator

Jazz guitar applicants should bring an electric guitar and a small amplifier to an in-person audition

Jazz audition questions can be directed to the Coordinator of Jazz Studies
