Portfolio Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Optional audition for scholarship consideration only; it is not required for program admission.

Statement

•Statement, 3 pages maximum: address literary influences, creative or critical interests at Ringling, writing/career goals, and anything else supporting your interest in Creative Writing

Creative Sample

•Submit 3-25 portfolio items through SlideRoom

•Well-edited, original writing in two or more categories: fiction, journalism, creative nonfiction, poetry, essays, film/TV scripts, plays, graphic novel/comic texts, picture book texts

•Excerpts of longer works are acceptable

•All work must be original; no AI-generated content

Essay

•Common App essay, 250-650 words

Transcript

•Official high school transcript

Letters of Recommendation

•Optional; from a counselor, teacher, or other recommender

Application Logistics

•Complete the Common App before submitting portfolio materials in SlideRoom

•Upload the written portfolio through Ringling's SlideRoom/Common App art supplement

•Submit only one portfolio, even if you are interested in multiple majors

•February 15 is the Presidential Scholarship consideration deadline; one scholarship is awarded per major

Eligibility

•Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA required

•SAT/ACT scores optional (test-optional)

•Ringling's current first-year application page says all other majors are accepted on a rolling basis

•The 2026 SlideRoom first-year and transfer entries are currently unavailable; each displays an August 31, 2026 deadline

•Transfer credit and upper-level placement are reviewed after admission from transfer documentation and portfolio materials

Transfer Pathway

Game Writing is an optional concentration within BFA Creative Writing; transfer applicants use the Creative Writing TRANSFER SlideRoom program. Ringling reviews qualifying transfer credit and upper-level placement from official academic records and portfolio materials.
