Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire List

Prepared repertoire on your principal applied area (voice or an instrument)

Prepared repertoire: two pieces appropriate to your instrument or voice, following the department's suggested-pieces guidelines

Vocal repertoire: one song in Italian from the Schirmer Twenty-Four Italian Songs and Arias or similar, plus one British or American art song or folk song; Broadway songs are not acceptable

Instrumental repertoire: an etude plus a contrasting solo or movement on your principal instrument

Accompaniment

Accompaniment is not required for instrumentalists

Staff piano accompaniment is provided for vocalists if requested

Application Logistics

Apply to RIC via Common App

Application fee: 50 USD (waived for veterans and dependents of veterans)

There is no longer a secondary admissions process — applicants apply through general admissions and audition

Placement

Admitted students take music theory and sight-singing/ear-training placement at the start of study — for course placement only, not admission

Admission Pathway

Upon admission to the college and passing the music audition, designated a "Music Education Intended Major"

Transfer Pathway

CCRI's Performing Arts Transfer, Music Education BM (RIC) JAA is a direct pathway into RIC Music Education; CCRI states all credits transfer and students enter the junior year ready for advanced study and fieldwork.

What's The Process

Audition Process

An entrance music audition on your principal instrument is required for admission

The BM in Music Education has the second-highest audition expectations, after the BM in Performance

Applicants who show potential but are not yet ready may be admitted to the BA in Music and re-audition for Music Education after one or two semesters

Audition Expectations

In-person audition on the RIC campus at the Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts

Audition heard by a committee of the music faculty

Prepared pieces on your principal instrument plus a short sight-reading exercise

You do not need to be admitted to RIC before auditioning

Recommended to complete your admissions application by your audition date
