Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire List

Brass repertoire may be prepared on trumpet, trombone, tuba/euphonium, or French horn

Repertoire

Generally prepare three contrasting pieces or movements from standard Classical repertoire (a mix of etudes and solos varies by instrument)

Tuba/euphonium repertoire: prepare an etude and two contrasting pieces or movements at a minimum RCM Grade 8 level

Etudes

One or two contrasting etudes (count varies by instrument) demonstrating your highest level of technical achievement

Scales & Technique

Trumpet: A major and A minor (harmonic, melodic, and natural) scales and arpeggios, two octaves

Trombone, French horn, tuba/euphonium: major and natural minor scales to three flats and three sharps, minimum one octave

Accompaniment

All accompanied works should be performed with accompaniment for both live and recorded auditions

A staff accompanist can be arranged through the DAN School

Application Portal

Apply to Queen's through OUAC, Common App, or the Queen's International Application Portal as appropriate

After applying, Queen's sends Bachelor of Music applicants instructions to book a live audition or submit a recorded audition online

Theory Placement

Admitted Bachelor of Music students complete music theory and aural-skills coursework; placement is handled after enrollment and does not affect admission

Deadline

Early consideration recorded audition and materials deadline: January 31, 2026

What's The Process

Audition Expectations

Classical Stream applicants prepare a 15-minute program of two or three works of contrasting styles or periods on one primary instrument

Audition live on campus or by recorded submission — Queen's does not give preference to live auditions

Brass auditions include a short sight-reading piece

On-campus BMus auditions for the 2026-2027 academic year are February 21 and February 22, 2026
