Application Logistics

Apply to PSU via Common App or school website

Submit a secondary application to the School of Music & Theater via Acceptd, selecting Music Education

Rolling admission — students can apply at any time up until the start of first term

Apply to both PSU and the School of Music & Theater before scheduling an audition appointment

Music Education coursework begins in the second year; students enter the School of Music via the entrance audition and complete area entrance requirements before declaring the major

Music theory and aural-skills placement may be assessed at orientation for course placement only — it does not affect admission

This concentration follows the official Band Track curriculum track

Transfer Pathway

PSU publishes a Music Transfer Advising Guide with direct core-music and Music Education course equivalencies from regional community colleges. Transfer students work with the program coordinator on a personal degree map and complete the formal Music Education portfolio and Basic Skills Jury after entering PSU.

What's The Process

Audition Process

Schedule an in-person audition by appointment with the appropriate area coordinator; appointments are available year-round with limited summer availability

Alternatively, submit an unedited video recording with the music application

Apply and audition by the priority scholarship deadline for scholarship consideration

Upload a recorded audition (video preferred) with the School of Music & Theater application, or request an in-person audition

Applicants are not admitted to the School of Music & Theater until they pass the entrance audition

Select Music Education as the major in the School of Music & Theater application; the entrance audition gives conditional admission to the major

After completing Introduction to Music Education in fall of the sophomore year, or upon transfer, apply for official acceptance to the Music Education major

Official acceptance also requires the Basic Skills Jury, a 3.0 cumulative and music GPA, and successful completion of the 290 level in applied studies

Available for both in-state and out-of-state music majors
