Portfolio submission — submit the complete portfolio in one submission

Scores / GPA

DARS report with current cumulative GPA

Essay / Statement

Statement — one-page letter of interest of about 300 words explaining interest in Musicology/Ethnomusicology and possible career intentions

Writing sample — one sample, preferably on a music topic, of about 10 pages (approximately 2,500 words), or two samples of about five pages each (approximately 1,500 words each)

Application Logistics

Apply to PSU via Common App or school website

Submit a secondary application to the School of Music & Theater via Acceptd

Rolling admission — students can apply at any time up until the start of first term

Apply to both PSU and the School of Music & Theater before scheduling an audition appointment

A separate audition/portfolio process to join the Music History major begins toward the end of the second year, as students assemble a portfolio of written and/or multimedia work

Music theory and aural-skills placement may be assessed at orientation for course placement only — it does not affect admission

Transfer Pathway

PSU publishes a Music Transfer Advising Guide with direct core-music course equivalencies from regional community colleges. Musicology/Ethnomusicology transfer students consult the coordinator and submit the required writing portfolio after PSU admission.

What's The Process

Audition Process

Schedule an in-person audition by appointment with the appropriate area coordinator; appointments are available year-round with limited summer availability

Alternatively, submit an unedited video recording with the music application

Apply and audition by the priority scholarship deadline for scholarship consideration

Upload a recorded audition (video preferred) with the School of Music & Theater application, or request an in-person audition

Applicants are not admitted to the School of Music & Theater until they pass the entrance audition

Submit the Musicology/Ethnomusicology portfolio during spring term of the sophomore year; transfer students consult the Program Coordinator after admission to Portland State
