Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire List

•Repertoire: prepare approximately 5 minutes of music demonstrating both musicality and technique

•Brass, woodwinds, and percussion: one musical selection is required; acceptable repertoire includes a sonata or concerto movement, solo etude, orchestral excerpts, or a combination

•Repertoire: percussionists should perform on at least two different instruments

•Strings, guitar, harp, and jazz applicants should follow the PLU Suggested Audition Repertoire guidance for their instrument

Accompaniment

•Accompaniment: school-provided pianist available for in-person auditions when applicable

Sheet Music

•Sheet music: bring a clean copy for the pianist

•Sheet music should be double-sided in a three-ring binder when possible

Application Logistics

•Apply to PLU via Common App (first-year/Running Start) or PLU transfer application (free to apply)

•Submit the PLU application by February 1, 2026 to allow time for the scholarship application

•Complete the Artistic Achievement Awards application by February 12, 2026 via the PLU student applicant portal

Admission Pathway

•Admitted students complete a music theory online placement test and diagnostic testing at the start of the first year — for course placement only, not admission

Important Notes

•Must be fully admitted to PLU to receive an award

•Music scholarships require private lessons and ensemble participation each semester

•Audition in your preferred area only — multiple auditions do not increase award amount

Transfer Pathway

PLU grants automatic junior standing for completed DTA/AAOT/AA-T/AS-T transfer degrees. BM Performance transfer students still complete a music entrance audition in their performance area through scholarship auditions or fall jury.

What's The Process

Audition Process

•An entrance audition for the music faculty is required to be admitted to a music major

•The audition is completed during Scholarship Auditions or as a Fall Jury after the first semester of private instruction

•The scholarship audition can serve as the entrance audition for declaring a music major

•Auditionees are ranked by accomplishment, talent, potential, and need within each discipline

•Auditions evaluated by PLU Music Faculty

Audition Expectations

•In-person auditions on campus February 20-22, 2026

•Virtual auditions accepted via video submission through the Artistic Achievement Awards application

•Prepare 5 minutes of music demonstrating both musicality and technique

Music Artistic Achievement Awards

•Renewable awards up to $7,500 per year for incoming students

•In addition to academic merit awards

•Awarded in a single specific area (for example strings, voice, or brass)

•Renewable up to three additional years

•Must take private lessons in the area of the award each semester

•Must participate in an assigned ensemble each semester

•Subject to review of enrollment and grades in lessons and ensemble
