Audition Requirements

Songs

Option 1: Musical Theatre Scholarship Only

2 contrasting selections from musical theatre repertoire

Example: one up-tempo contemporary and one Golden Age ballad

Showcase vocal range and musicianship

5 minutes of music total

Option 2: Musical Theatre + Music Scholarship

2 selections: (1) art or folk song, (2) musical theatre selection

One selection in a language other than English preferred but not required

Showcase range and musicianship

5 minutes of music total

Accompaniment

School-provided pianist available for in-person auditions

Bring clean copy of music for the pianist

Double-sided music in a three-ring binder preferred

Application Logistics

Apply to PLU via Common App (first-year/Running Start) or PLU transfer application (free to apply)

Complete Artistic Achievement Awards application by February 11, 2027

Video auditions accepted via email through May 1

After May 1, students may apply during first semester at PLU

Admission Pathway

BFA Musical Theatre auditions happen concurrently with the Artistic Achievement Award scholarship audition — same application and materials used for both

Students may also apply for other BFA concentrations with separate audition materials

Transfer Pathway

PLU grants automatic junior standing for completed DTA/AAOT/AA-T/AS-T transfer degrees. BFA Theatre students still complete the theatre audition/interview or portfolio review for their chosen track.

What's The Process

Audition Process

Choose Option 1 (MT only) or Option 2 (Music + MT) based on scholarship interests

Music scholarships awarded in a single specific area

Students can audition for both Music and Musical Theatre scholarships in one session

Voice scholarship applicants also present monologue and dance for Theatre faculty

Audition Expectations

Perform vocal selections and monologue for faculty

Musical Theatre applicants sing for Music faculty in a second location

Brief interview following the audition

In-person: on campus February 19-21, 2027

Virtual: submit video to theatre-dance@plu.edu, faculty conducts Zoom interview

Renewable awards up to $7,500 per year for incoming students
