Audition Requirements

Repertoire

Audition on your instrumental principal applied area using the scholarship-audition repertoire for keyboard, strings, woodwinds/brass, or percussion

Keyboard repertoire: two works from two different periods; pianists play at least one from memory; at least one major scale; possible sight-reading

Strings repertoire: two contrasting etudes or solos; any major or minor scale up to three sharps and flats; memorization not required; possible sight-reading

Woodwinds/brass repertoire: short solo or etude excerpts, several major scales up to three sharps and flats, a full-range chromatic scale, and possible sight-reading

Percussion repertoire: prepared selections in at least two of snare drum, keyboard percussion, and timpani; possible sight-reading

Apply to Pittsburg State University and complete the Music Scholarship Audition Application on the PSU music website

Indicate your principal applied area and preferred audition date in the application

Video links can be submitted via the application or emailed to music@pittstate.edu

Admission Pathway

Entering music majors take a theory placement test at the start of the program; freshmen may opt out and enroll in Music Fundamentals - for course placement only, not admission

Program Requirements

Music Education prepares students for State of Kansas K-12 music-teacher certification

What's The Process

Audition Process

Pass a music audition on your principal instrument and be admitted to the university

Auditions are required of entering and transfer students

Music Education applicants complete an interview with music faculty as part of admission

Current on-campus dates are the Music Major Test Drive and Audition Day on Nov. 13, 2026, and Music Scholarship Audition Day on Feb. 19, 2027

Friday auditions are also available by appointment while classes are in session

Video auditions may be requested by international or long-distance applicants; this restricted alternative is arranged with the Music office

Audition Expectations

Instrumental auditions begin at 2:00 PM on Music Scholarship Audition Day

Audition day includes a general meeting with music faculty and a meeting with the Student Advisory Council
