Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire List

•Include a repertoire list of solo pieces with your Music Application

•Wind/string applicants: prepare a solo or two etudes of contrasting styles; accompaniment is optional

•Percussionists: prepare one etude each on snare drum, timpani, and mallet/keyboard instrument

Scales & Technique

•Wind players: chromatic scale over the full range of the instrument

•Wind major scales: C, F, B-flat, E-flat, A-flat, D-flat, G, and D (concert keys)

•String major scales: C, G, D, A, E, F, B-flat, and E-flat (3 octaves)

•Percussionists: be prepared to perform any of the Thirteen Snare Drum Rudiments and play the wind scales on mallet instrument

•Bring copies of your sheet music for the staff accompanist if using one

What's The Process

Audition Process

•Apply to OBU first; music study admission and financial aid require university acceptance

•Submit the Music Application (separate from the university application)

•Audition dates correspond to Bison Days; faculty will contact you to schedule after receiving your application

•Instrumental Track applicants audition for the music faculty using OBU’s Instrumental requirements

Audition Expectations

•Wind, string, and percussion requirements are listed by instrument family on OBU’s audition page

•Sight-reading examples are provided at the audition

•Jazz Orchestra applicants should prepare an appropriate selection from the High School Jazz Ensemble folder

•Drum set applicants should be able to play several styles including swing, bossa nova, samba, and shuffle

•You will receive two notices by mail from the Division of Music

•First notice: your readiness to pursue a degree in music at OBU

•Second notice: financial aid offered by the Division of Music
