Conditional Prescreen Requirements

Vocal-route BA Music applicants must submit the same prescreen recording required for BM Music Theater or BM Vocal Performance (due Oct. 1 for the November audition, Dec. 1 as the final deadline). Instrumental-route applicants do not prescreen and schedule directly into a Live Virtual or in-person National Audition Weekend.

Songs

BA Music Applicants Choose One Vocal Track

Music Theater track — one musical theater song from any time period, plus one contrasting song from any time period/style (musical theater, pop, hip-hop, folk, rock, rap, soul, country, punk, etc.); each 60-90 seconds

Vocal Performance track — three classical or art songs, 60-90 seconds each: one in English, one an early Italian piece (e.g., a selection from 24 Italian Songs and Arias of the 17th and 18th Centuries), and one of the applicant's choice

Sing to live or recorded accompaniment — no a cappella, on either track

Instrumental-Route Applicants

No prescreen — audition directly on your major instrument at a Live Virtual or in-person National Audition Weekend

Monologues

Required Only on the Music Theater Track

One contemporary monologue (typically written after 1950) from a published play or by a professional writer

One classical monologue (typically written before 1950) from a published play or by a professional writer, with heightened language (Shakespeare, Molière, Marlowe, Middleton, Kushner, August Wilson, etc.)

Each monologue 60-90 seconds, memorized

Vocal Performance Track & Instrumental-Route Applicants

No monologue required

Dance

Required Only on the Music Theater Track

Solo dance sample, 60-90 sec recommended, in any discipline you feel confident in — jazz, ballet, tap, modern, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, or styles beyond American and Euro-western traditions

Performance footage may be used if you are clearly featured on your own; self-choreographed material is permitted

Vocal Performance Track & Instrumental-Route Applicants

No dance sample required

Additional Materials

Slate Video (Vocal-Route Applicants)

Record one introduction video stating your name and, optionally, your pronouns

Speak loudly and clearly directly to the camera

Do not repeat the slate in individual performance videos

Music Theater track — same two songs as the prescreen (not required to be identical); performed from memory

Vocal Performance track — same three classical/art songs as the prescreen; must prepare entire pieces, not a cut; performed from memory

Accompaniment (Vocal-Route Applicants)

Accompanist provided free of charge at on-campus audition dates

Bring one copy of sheet music for accompanist — hole punched, in a three-ring binder

All sheet music must be easily readable

Brief meeting with accompanist prior to scheduled audition time

Instrumental-Route Applicants

Audition live on your major instrument per the Undergraduate Instrumental Auditions repertoire guidelines for your instrument

Monologues

Music Theater Track Only

Same two contrasting monologues as the prescreen (not required to be identical); memorized

Vocal Performance Track & Instrumental-Route Applicants

No monologue required

Dance

Music Theater Track Only

Mandatory dance evaluation — combination taught on-site with warm-up time provided; no prior dance experience necessary

Bring a change of clothes and shoes comfortable for dancing

Instrumental-route applicants audition on their major instrument — see the Undergraduate Instrumental Auditions repertoire guidelines for your instrument; no prescreen recording is required

Vocal-route applicants choose either the full BM Music Theater vocal requirements or the full BM Vocal Performance vocal requirements for their audition, including that program's prescreen recording (submit by Oct. 1 or Dec. 1) ahead of the live callback

Live Virtual Auditions are held in November 2026; in-person National Audition Weekends are held Jan. 29-30, 2027 and Feb. 26-27, 2027 on the OCU campus
