Training
•General is the base track of Oakland's Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Choral and General Music, combining choral conducting and general-music pedagogy with performance coursework.
•Choral Activities Director Michael Mitchell leads the choral-conducting sequence, alongside music-education faculty Cat Bennett, Pamela Klena, and Colleen McNickle.
•The program pairs music-specific teaching courses — rather than generic education coursework — with more than 100 hours of community engagement before student teaching, preparing graduates for the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification.
Professional Development
•Students can perform in Oakland Chorale under Mitchell's direction and Opera Workshop, and have access to more than 150 music-education and performance events each year.
•Graduates are prepared for K-12 teaching, performing and conducting, and studio or accompanist work.
