Prescreen Requirements

Portfolio

Creative sample: audio of three or four original songs to which you significantly contributed; recording and performance quality are not evaluated

Sheet Music

Sheet music lead sheets: include key signature, time signature, melody, lyrics, and chords when applicable

Score: one musical composition arranged for instrumentation different than you usually use

Video

Performance video: demonstrate basic competence or better on an instrument of your choice; voice is accepted, but an instrument is preferred

Introduction video: no more than 2 minutes discussing your musical and personal background and your goals for NYU

Statement

Brief written statement outlining artistic and career goals and what you hope to gain from studying at NYU

Resume

Resume or CV as a PDF

Essay

Optional college essay may be included because the composition program does not access the Common App essay

Application Logistics

Submit the Common App to NYU and select Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development

Select Music - Theory and Composition (Bachelor of Music) as the NYU program

Submit the portfolio through Acceptd under Music Theory & Composition: Bachelor of Music, which includes Concert Music, Screen Scoring, and Songwriting concentrations

Eligibility

Transfer students are accepted for fall semester only

Enrollment

Program starts in fall and may be completed full-time or part-time

Audition Process

Apply to NYU Steinhardt before scheduling any interview

Submit portfolio materials through Acceptd by the deadline for your decision plan

Early Decision I and II applicants are required to complete a remote interview after submitting application and portfolio materials

Regular Decision and transfer interviews are by invitation after faculty review the portfolio

Audition Expectations

Interviews are conducted remotely over Zoom

Interview may include discussion of your background as a musician and composer, goals for the program, portfolio works, and brief music theory fundamentals

Not being invited to interview for Regular Decision or transfer does not mean you have been rejected
