Audition Requirements

Songs

Requirements

Two contrasting musical theatre songs, 60-90 sec each

Sing with live or recorded accompaniment

No a cappella singing

Live Audition

An accompanist is provided for auditions at the New York campus

Bring sheet music in a three-ring binder and in the correct key

Monologues

Requirements

One contemporary monologue from a published American play, 60-90 sec

The monologue cannot be from a musical, television show, or film

Material must be fully memorized

Dance

Requirements

Submit at least one solo dance video with the entire body in frame

Perform choreography to music; no a cappella dance

Option A

Learn and record NYFA's beginner-level theatre dance tutorial

Option B

Submit 30-60 seconds in jazz, theatre dance, modern, lyrical/contemporary, or ballet

No tap or hip hop

Evaluation

NYFA considers connection to music, point of view, storytelling, communication through movement, and performance quality in addition to technique

Optional Wild Card

Submit a 60-90 second video that shows something distinctive about you

Examples include a pop/rock song, another dance style, gymnastics, a special skill, or an instrument

The wild card is normally reviewed by video rather than performed live

Required: narrative statement, maximum 3 typed pages

Address reasons for pursuing a BFA, formative creative experiences, contemporary influences, inspirations, and personal artistic goals

Four-year, eight-semester BFA offered at the New York campus

Transfer Pathway

NYFA may grant advanced standing toward the BFA Musical Theatre program for qualifying students who complete its 1- or 2-year Musical Theatre certificate curriculum, subject to institutional review.

What's The Process

Audition Process

Audition in person, live virtually, or by recorded self-tape

New York live auditions provide a pianist; auditions elsewhere require an instrumental backing track

Dance and wild-card pieces are submitted by video unless NYFA specifically requests a live presentation

Videos must remain accessible because materials may be shared with multiple reviewers

A candidate interview is part of BFA admissions and may take place by phone, virtually, or in person
