Scholarship Audition, Interview, and Portfolio Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Optional audition, interview, and portfolio for scholarship consideration only; they are not required for program admission.

Songs

Voice Repertoire — Two Contrasting Selections

•Sing both selections from memory

•One selection must be in English; the second may be in English or another language

•An opera or oratorio aria may be included

Accompaniment

•Bring an accompanist or request a Sheridan accompanist at least two weeks in advance

Audition Expectations

•Evaluation includes tonal quality, rhythm, intonation, phrasing, interpretation, diction, stage presence, and accuracy

•Be prepared to sight-read aural-theory exercises

Additional Materials

PORTFOLIO (composition/music production scholarship audition): Present two contrasting compositions or productions as recordings or live performances; at least one work must be for more than one instrument; include scores when applicable

SHEET MUSIC (if using a Sheridan accompanist): Strings and voice applicants should provide one copy at least two weeks before the audition

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION (optional): Letters from teachers or others familiar with the applicant's musical ability are welcome

•For scholarship consideration, complete the separate Music Scholarship Audition Form and contact Dr. Eric Richards to initiate an audition

This is a transfer pathway degree built to transfer into a four-year program. Confirm which universities it articulates to, and which credits carry over, before you enroll.

What's The Process

Audition Process

•No audition is required for admission to the AFA Music program

•Applicants seeking a music scholarship must complete an audition and interview

•Live auditions are strongly encouraged

•Applicants may audition in person, live by Zoom, or by recorded video or audio

•Contact Dr. Eric Richards at erichards@sheridan.edu to initiate an audition

Audition Expectations

•Brass and woodwinds: Prepare two contrasting standard solos, major and minor scales with arpeggios, a chromatic scale, and sight-reading

•Guitar: Prepare two contrasting movements or compositions, including a Bach suite movement or equivalent; also prepare jazz lead-sheet sight-reading, major scales, and melodic minor scales

•Percussion: Prepare one mallet solo, one concert-style snare drum solo, and at least one selection on timpani, multiple percussion, drum set, or world percussion

•Piano: Prepare two memorized solos from different periods, sight-reading, major scales, and melodic minor scales

•Strings: Prepare two major scales, one melodic minor scale, and either a concerto or sonata movement or three contrasting orchestral excerpts

•Composition and music production: Present two contrasting compositions or productions as recordings or live performances; at least one work must be for more than one instrument

•Include scores when applicable

•Composition and music production applicants should also be active performers on a conventional instrument

Scholarship Info

•Scholarships up to $10,000 are available for music majors

•Non-majors performing in ensembles may also qualify

•Remote and in-person scholarship auditions are available
