Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire

Prepare two contrasting selections on the primary instrument. Brass and woodwind applicants should select contrasting works of no more than two minutes each. Percussionists should prepare one selection each on snare or multi-percussion, marimba, and timpani. Pianists should prepare three contrasting pieces from three historical periods; memorization is required for piano performance.

Scales & Technique

Brass applicants should prepare a chromatic scale. Woodwind scales are optional. Pianists should prepare all major scales and arpeggios; these are recommended but not required.

If unable to attend a designated date, arrange a separate audition by appointment

Placement

Admitted music majors take a music theory and aural-skills placement exam at orientation — for course placement only, not admission

Accompaniment

Instrumental students are not required to audition with piano accompaniment

Transfer Pathway

Transfer students may complete the Oklahoma associate-degree general-education block except MUS 2863. B.M. Performance students must complete a junior-standing jury on the major instrument before 4000-level lessons and may arrange the jury before the semester begins.

Audition Expectations

Music auditions are used for admission and music scholarships.

Choose an in-person audition in the Center for Performing Arts, or arrange a virtual, prerecorded, or other appointment-based format with the department.

After the audition, complete the music placement process before enrolling in upper-level study.
