Audition Requirements

Dance

Technical Skills

•Barre exercises: plié in first, second, and fifth positions; tendu en croix; rond de jambe en dehors and en dedans; and grand battement en croix

•Pirouettes en dehors and en dedans in both parallel and turned-out positions

•Traveling combinations with at least two jumps and two turns on both right and left sides

Solo Dance Performance

•One solo dance piece in a style of your choice

•Minimum 90 seconds and maximum 2.5 minutes

•Demonstrate technical execution, movement control and clarity, performance quality, musical interpretation, dynamic range, and artistic expression

•Film in a well-lit, quiet location free from distraction or background noise

Wild Card Video (Optional)

•Maximum 5 minutes

•Use this to show your personality or something meaningful about you, such as a special skill, story, instrument, skit, hobby, comedy, or how-to demonstration

Additional Materials

Slate Video

Record a separate introduction stating your name and, if desired, your pronouns

Speak clearly and directly to the camera

Maximum 10 seconds

The slate is a separate file and is not repeated before the technical-skills or solo recordings

Application Logistics

•Submit dance audition materials through NMU Acceptd when the portal opens

•Applicants attending a listed regional dance event that uses Acceptd or Submittable do not need a duplicate NMU submission

Important Notes

•NMU states the next theatre and dance application cycle opens October 1, 2027

•Submit by March 1 for departmental scholarship consideration

•Scholarship offers are sent by April 1

This is a transfer pathway degree built to transfer into a four-year program. Confirm which universities it articulates to, and which credits carry over, before you enroll.

What's The Process

Audition Process

•The current entrance page includes the AA Dance program in the same audition process as NMU's bachelor's Dance program

•Submit materials through Acceptd if you cannot attend an in-person regional or national audition event

•A short Zoom interview with faculty may be required after review of the audition

Scholarship Consideration

•The program audition also serves as the departmental scholarship audition

•Submit by March 1 for departmental scholarship consideration

•Scholarship offers are sent no later than April 1

•Incoming first-year students must accept scholarship offers by May 1
