Audition Requirements

Repertoire List

•Prepare repertoire on your principal instrument appropriate to your area:

-Strings: one three-octave scale in any key, one etude, and one movement of a Bach solo work or a standard concerto movement (bass: one one-octave scale)

-Trumpet: two contrasting etudes (one lyrical, one technical) or one substantial solo with both, plus a chromatic scale across your range

-Percussion: a prepared solo in one area (snare, mallet keyboard, timpani, or multiple percussion) plus rudiments/scales and sight-reading; two areas (one keyboard) for scholarship consideration

-Woodwinds and other winds/brass: prepared solo or etudes and scales per the area requirement sheet

Scales & Technique

•Be prepared to perform scales as specified for your instrument

•Be prepared to sight-read a provided excerpt

Accompaniment

•A staff accompanist can be provided at no charge if music is submitted in advance

Good to Know

Application Logistics

•Submit the NMSU university application (Common App or NMSU online application)

•Submit the separate Music Department audition registration form online

Important Notes

•Must be accepted into the Music Department before registering for music major courses

•Accompanist provided at no charge if music is sent in advance

•Admitted music majors take a piano proficiency requirement and music theory/aural-skills coursework — for course placement and progression, not admission

What's The Process

Audition Process

•An audition before a panel of at least three Music faculty is required for acceptance as a Music major

•Auditions received before April 1 receive highest consideration for scholarships

•Last date to submit an audition for program acceptance: August 1

•After August 1: provisional admission possible with non-credit lessons to prepare an end-of-semester audition

Audition Expectations

•In-person auditions preferred — contact the department to schedule when visiting campus

•Video audition arrangements available if unable to audition in person

•Perform a prepared audition on your principal instrument for the faculty panel

•Be prepared to play scales and sight-read as specified for your area

•Teaching disposition is assessed through the panel interview

•Interview about musical background and prospective major
