Audition Requirements
Songs
TWO CONTRASTING SELECTIONS
•Two pieces from the standard classical art song repertoire in varying styles or tempi
•Songs or arias may be in English or a foreign language (Italian, French, German, Latin, or Spanish)
•Comparable to All-State Choir or Solo and Ensemble competition-level selections
PREPARATION
•Selections must be memorized and sung without score
•Piano accompaniment required — no a cappella
•If not bringing your own accompanist, send a copy of your music with your application in advance

APPLICATION PROCESS
•Submit NMSU university application (Common App or NMSU online application)
•Submit separate Music Department audition registration form online
MUSIC DEPARTMENT APPLICATION
•Must be accepted into the Music Department before registering for music major courses
•Accompanist provided at no charge if music is sent in advance
What's The Process
AUDITION FORMAT
•In-person auditions preferred — contact department to schedule when visiting campus
•Video audition arrangements available if unable to audition in person
•Contact Professor Sarah Neely (Voice Area Coordinator) to schedule
AUDITION DAY
•Perform two prepared vocal solos from memory with piano accompaniment
•Sight-read a provided excerpt (similar to All-State audition exercises)
•Demonstrate pitch recognition and vocal range
•Interview about musical background and prospective major
DEADLINES
•Auditions received before April 1 receive highest consideration for scholarships
•Last date to submit an audition for program acceptance: August 1
•After August 1: provisional admission possible with non-credit voice lessons to prepare end-of-semester audition
