Admission Pathway

University application required plus a successful primary-instrument audition for private instruction

Formal admission to the BME major follows a teaching-disposition interview with music education faculty after MUS 2340

No separate program application form needed beyond the university application

Placement

Admitted students take a Music Theory Placement Exam (written, aural skills, and sight-singing) at orientation — for course placement only, not admission

Transfer Pathway

All incoming and transfer music majors must pass an audition on their primary instrument to enter private instruction, and Music Education majors complete a teaching-disposition interview with music education faculty after MUS 2340 for formal admission to the BME — an internal enroll-then-audition pathway that does not require pre-approved transfer coursework. MSU Denver requires at least 30 resident credits to graduate.

What's The Process

Admission Process

All music majors first pass an audition on their primary instrument for entry into MUS 1710 Private Instruction I

Formal admission to the Bachelor of Music Education major is by an interview with the music education faculty upon completion of MUS 2340, Foundations of Music Education

The BME prepares students for K-12 licensure in the State of Colorado and is approved by the Colorado State Department of Education

What to Expect (in-Person Audition)

Held in January, February, and August at the King Center; approximately 12 minutes; arrive 15 minutes early

Online (recorded) auditions also accepted, with results within three weeks
