Repertoire
•Jazz & American Improvised Music (JAIM) studio instruction is offered for guitar, bass, drum set, piano, voice, woodwinds, brass, strings, and percussion
•Prepare the audition repertoire for your specific instrument area (see the JAIM requirements per instrument):
-WINDS / BRASS: two major and two minor scales with arpeggios (one octave, from memory); play the melody and improvise two choruses on a blues or jazz standard of your choosing
-GUITAR: maj7/7/min7/min7b5/dim voicings in all keys, comp in a jazz style, and a 12-bar blues (melody, comping, and improvisation) over a standard
-PIANO: a jazz standard or blues, one solo-piano piece in any style, and ii–V–I progressions with major scales in C and F
-BASS (electric or upright): two-octave major scales (F, G, C, Ab) and one-octave minor scales (C, D, F); three choruses of a walking bass line over a 12-bar blues plus a solo; a contrasting non-walking style example
-DRUMSET: a bright 4/4 swing tune, a straight-eighth groove of your choice, and rudiments (double-stroke roll, paradiddle, flam accent, flam tap)
-VOICE: one jazz piece from memory and a second contrasting piece from memory, plus a melodic and rhythmic call-and-response response
Sight-Reading
•Required for most JAIM instruments at in-person auditions (selected from standard big band or small-group repertoire); see your instrument area for specifics
