Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire List

Prepare two contrasting pieces from the standard repertoire

Repertoire should not include pop or original tunes

One- to two-minute excerpts are acceptable for video auditions

Enrollment

Fall start only unless a student passes out of MUS 109 Music Theory I by exam

Spring entry may require extra semesters to complete the program

Application Portal

Apply to MCC for the degree through the free SUNY Application

Submit the MCC Music Entrance & Audition Form for the music-area audition

Applied Lessons

12 one-hour lessons for 4 semesters required

Cost of lessons is not included in MCC tuition

Ensemble

Students participate in a vocal or instrumental ensemble each semester

What's The Process

Audition Process

Email Prof. John Nyerges to begin assessment and placement for the correct classes

Live auditions are held most Mondays during the academic year, September-December and February-May, from 4:00-5:30 PM

Video auditions accepted year-round; after Memorial Day, only video auditions accepted

Instrument-Specific Requirements

Percussion applicants should prepare one snare drum exercise and at least two drum-set grooves: swing, funk, shuffle, or Latin

Marimba players should include a short marimba piece when applicable

Guitar applicants should play acoustic or undistorted electric guitar
