The 75-credit Musical Theatre emphasis integrates acting with Music Skills for Theatre I-II, eight semesters of private voice, Musical Theatre Acting I-II, theatre speech, stage dialects, and advanced scene study

Required dance study includes jazz, ballet, and tap, with additional choices in contemporary dance, dance partnering, or higher-level technique

The shared BFA core adds directing, play analysis, theatre history, dramaturgy, and global performance perspectives to the singing-actor sequence

Performance & Productions

Students complete four credits of acting practicum and three credits of Summer Stock, applying vocal, acting, and movement training in realized productions

Theatre activity credits must span at least three areas, creating experience beyond performance in production and management work

Songs

Two Song Selections

One ballad

One up-tempo song

16 bars each for in-person auditions

Up to 32 bars each for video auditions

Monologues

Two Contrasting Monologues

One comedic monologue

One dramatic monologue

60 seconds each for in-person auditions

90 seconds each for video auditions

Time limits strictly enforced for in-person auditions

Dance

Movement Audition

Additional Materials

Resume

Required

Include theatre experience beginning with junior year of high school, listed in reverse chronological order

Essay

150-word essay explaining why you want the BFA degree

Letters of Recommendation

Two letters: one from a teacher and one from a director/designer with whom you have worked

Good to Know

Eligibility

Minimum GPA and/or rank in top 40% of high school class

Students not meeting standards may be admitted but must meet BFA continuation requirements by end of freshman year

Students may apply to all three BFA concentrations but can be admitted to only one

BFA and Talent Grant applications due 48 hours before the scheduled audition

Important Notes

Incoming students encouraged to apply for Theatre & Dance Talent Grant

If applying for BFA, a separate Talent Grant application is not required

What's The Process

Audition Expectations

In-person auditions held twice per year: spring and the week before fall classes

Video auditions accepted for students who cannot attend in person

The department will contact you with an audition time after you submit the BFA application

If auditioning by video, include a 60-second introduction video and submit materials by email to corrie.eggimann@mnsu.edu

Prior academic record, vocal/dance/acting ability, stage presence, professional behavior, and dedication to a professional musical theatre career

First-Year and Transfer Talent Grants available for incoming Theatre and Dance majors

Talent Grant auditions held in conjunction with BFA auditions

If applying for BFA, a separate Talent Grant application is not required
