Audition Requirements

Songs

Two Memorized Songs

Contrasting styles that demonstrate range and versatility

Selections should be from musical theatre repertoire

At least one piece should be from the Golden Era (pre-1970)

Accompaniment

Both selections should be accompanied

An accompanist is provided for on-campus auditions

Bring clean, well-marked sheet music in the appropriate key, organized in a binder

Monologues

One Memorized Monologue

One minute in length

From a published play

Should show some journey or discovery

Material Selection

Choose a character within a reasonable age span

Avoid monologues requiring heavy accents, eccentric character traits, specific costumes, or props

Additional Materials

Questionnaire

Questionnaire required: complete the Musical Theatre section in the Performing Arts application

Questionnaire prompt: list show titles and roles plus dance or music experience

Questionnaire prompt: list technical theatre involvement, such as costumes, makeup, set construction, lighting, sound, or design

Application Logistics

Complete the admissions application to Milligan

Complete the performing arts scholarship application and indicate the preferred audition date

The first-time student application page says there is no application fee

Important Notes

Milligan reviews first-time student applications on a rolling basis as long as space is available

First-time students are encouraged to apply by December 1 for maximum scholarship and financial-aid consideration

Transfer Pathway

Students entering with an eligible Tennessee community-college AA or AS are considered to have completed most Milligan general education requirements. BA Musical Theatre major coursework and the required admission audition still apply.

What's The Process

Audition Process

Musical Theatre major applicants must complete an audition showcasing acting and singing

Complete the performing arts scholarship application and indicate the preferred audition date

The Music Office contacts applicants about a specific audition time or video due date

In-person auditions are preferred; another date can be assigned if an applicant cannot attend a listed date

Video auditions through YouTube or another video-format link are accepted when in-person audition is not possible

Remote applicants may provide a web link, upload files, or mail a DVD

Audition Expectations

Audition components are singing and acting

The page does not publish a dance audition requirement for admission

On-campus singers use the provided accompanist

Competitive, renewable scholarship awarded to a limited number of students each year

Awarded to students who exhibit excellent performance ability and potential through an audition

Both non-majors and Musical Theatre majors are eligible
