Audition Format
•Four required components completed on audition day:
-Solo performance on primary instrument or voice
-Vocal aural assessment
-Music theory examination
-Degree-specific interview
•Audition day begins promptly at 9:15 AM and concludes by 2:30 PM
•Professional attire expected
•Results emailed within two weeks
Vocal Aural Assessment
•Sing a well-known folk song of your choice (e.g., "Happy Birthday," "America," "Row, Row, Row Your Boat")
•Echo/sing single pitches, melodic sequences (2-7 pitches), and pitches from major, minor, augmented, diminished, and dominant 7th triads
Music Theory Examination
•Diagnostic placement tool for theory courses
•Covers key signatures, scale construction, intervals (minor 2nd through octave), chord construction, and rhythmic notation
Interview
•Conducted by faculty
•Prepare to discuss career motivation, skills, 5-year and 10-year goals, and previous experience
Preparation Tips
•Prepare 2 contrasting works that demonstrate your musical and technical mastery
•Major and/or chromatic scales may be asked of instrumentalists
•A short sight reading may also be required
•Bring a repertoire list of upper-intermediate and advanced works studied
•For pianists: bring a list of accompaniments and chamber works performed
