Training
•BM in Studio Music and Jazz - Vocal requires a four-selection prescreen and audition spanning swing, ballad, and a free-choice style, with scat/vocal improvisation and sight-singing evaluated directly
•Program mission is to prepare jazz vocalists for the music profession or graduate school, producing recordings for the Down Beat Student Music Awards and campus radio/Internet broadcast
•Curriculum covers performance, composition/arranging, technology, conducting, and scholarship alongside on- and off-campus performance opportunities
Professional Development
•An accompanist is provided for the on-campus audition, and applicants bring their own lead sheets in performance keys — professional-format chart reading is expected from the audition stage
•Vocal-jazz repertoire and prescreen guidance are overseen by Dr. Kate Reid, who fields applicant repertoire questions directly
Degree Flexibility
•Applicants are encouraged (not required) to bring new material to the live audition beyond the prescreen selections, giving singers room to show range across the process
