Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire

•Two selections of contrasting styles — one demonstrating technical facility, the other beauty of tone — performed on your primary instrument (brass, woodwind, string, percussion, piano, harp, or guitar)

•Selections should be standard solo works or etudes appropriate to your instrument; repertoire of equal or greater difficulty may be substituted

•Some areas have specific requirements — for example, piano requires three memorized solo works including a sonata movement and two contrasting pieces from different periods

•Review your instrument's detailed repertoire list on the Department of Music audition page for your area (Brass, Woodwinds, Strings, Percussion, or Piano)

Scales & Technique

•Be prepared to demonstrate scales as specified for your instrument; most areas require major and minor scales, with ranges and octaves varying by instrument

Accompaniment

•An accompanist is generally not provided and is not required; applicants may provide their own

•Apply to both concurrently — no need to wait for a University decision first

What's The Process

Audition Expectations

•Schedule a live on-campus audition, or upload a video audition

•Audition on your primary performance medium — a brass, woodwind, string, or percussion instrument (piano, harp, and guitar are also offered)

•Audition includes a performance on your instrument, scales/technique, sight-reading where required, and an interview

•No application fee for the Department of Music application
