Two classical works, performed from memory

One selection must be in English

One selection must be in another language

Accompaniment

In-person auditions: accompanist provided, or bring your own — no recorded accompaniment permitted

Video auditions: both pieces must be accompanied (live or pre-recorded accompaniment accepted)

Repertoire

Appropriate repertoire may be found in the solo and ensemble lists published by the Ohio Music Education Association

Application Logistics

Two separate applications: Miami University (Common App or Coalition App) + Department of Music (via Applicant Status Page)

Apply to both concurrently — no need to wait for a University decision first

Indicate Music Education (Choral/General or Instrumental) as your intended major

Licensure & Placement

A background check and fingerprinting are required once a year for all music education majors

Music education majors must maintain an active Ohio preservice teacher permit throughout the program

Admitted students take a music theory and aural-skills placement assessment for course placement only, not admission

What's The Process

Audition Process

Two separate steps: apply to Miami University, then apply to the Department of Music and request an audition through your applicant status page

Audition on voice — the primary performance medium for choral/general track applicants — on campus or by uploading a video audition

Audition includes a vocal performance, sight-reading, a pitch memory test, and an interview

No application fee for the Department of Music application

Upper-Level Review (After Enrollment)

Admission to 300-level (junior) music education courses requires passing an upper-level review that includes an interview and a professional portfolio of files and artifacts

This review takes place after enrollment and is not part of first-year admission
