Program Recognition
•Joint Bachelor of Science awarded as Course 21E (Humanities and Engineering) or Course 21S (Humanities and Science), with Theater Arts as the humanities field
•Theater Arts is one of sixteen humanities fields the MIT registrar lists on the 21E and 21S degree charts
•Music and Theater Arts presents the degree as drawing on both theater arts and engineering or science studies so graduates hold a basic command of each mode of inquiry
Training
•The theater half runs 90-108 units: one 12-unit foundation subject from the 21T core group, then elective subjects planned with the major advisor
•The engineering or science half is six elective subjects restricted to a single curriculum and approved by a faculty member in that field
•Two communication-intensive (CI-M) subjects are required, normally one from the 21T curriculum and one from the science or engineering field
•Designated 21T communication-intensive options include Acting with the Camera, Set Design, Costume Design, Technical Design for Performance, Playwriting Methods, Acting: Techniques and Style, and Playwrights Lab

Degree Flexibility
•Qualified students may substitute the undergraduate thesis 21T.THU for one 12-unit theater elective with departmental approval
•The catalog sets the degree at 180 units beyond the General Institute Requirements, with the humanities component at 81-114 units and the partner field at 54-72 units
•Joint majors are discouraged from adding a double major and may not count any subject toward both the 21E or 21S program and another course of study
