Brass, woodwind, and percussion applicants: prepare two contrasting etudes or pieces totaling approximately 10 minutes

Guitar applicants: prepare two or three selections in contrasting styles, demonstrate knowledge of basic chords, and prepare a hymn of choice

Suggested sources include LMEA All-State materials, Rubank concert collections, and Schirmer solo collections; memorization is optional for all selections

At the end of the second year, music majors must pass the department's proficiency series before enrolling in 300-level applied music
