Audition Requirements

Monologues

Two Monologues: A Contemporary and A Classical Monologue

Each monologue should be approximately 90 seconds, or 3 minutes for both pieces

Slate: state the play title and author of each monologue before you perform it

Material Selection

Choose a monologue from a published play that is a role in which you are likely to be cast

Pieces should be age appropriate — do not choose pieces much younger or much older than you

Choose a piece that you enjoy performing

Read the play from which the piece is chosen

What to Avoid

Strongly advised to avoid Romeo & Juliet, Macbeth, and Hamlet for classical material

Strongly advised to avoid using any dialects

Avoid highly exaggerated characters, sketch comedy, or extremely farcical/cartoon-type characters

Do not use costumes

You may use very simple objects as props (a piece of paper, a phone, etc.) but best to keep your performance very simple

Additional Materials

Slate Video

Short 20-30 second introduction stating your name, where you are from, and something interesting about yourself

Portfolio (Recommended for Design/Technical Theatre Applicants)

Submit a portfolio for technical theatre and/or design, including stage management

Letters of Recommendation (Required for Design/Technical Theatre Applicants)

Submit a strong recommendation from a high school drama teacher or other supervisor detailing the quantity and quality of backstage work

Resume (Optional for Directing/Playwriting Applicants)

Include a current theatre resume and contact information

Statement (Optional for Directing/Playwriting Applicants)

Submit a statement of purpose

Portfolio (Optional for Directing Applicants)

Include a directing portfolio with projects directed, concept statements, and photos

Portfolio (Optional for Playwriting Applicants)

Submit a playwriting portfolio with any production history and 10-30 pages of sample dramatic writing

Audition Expectations

There are no live auditions — all submissions are virtual

Students interested in both acting and technical/design experience encouraged to submit portfolio/recommendations for both areas

Monologue performances evaluated on preparation, use of language and text, clear intention and purpose, sense of truth, emotional connection and availability, and range of vocal and physical expression

Meara Boughey Memorial Scholarship — awarded annually to passionate theatre or music majors based on merit and need

Virginia Barnelle Scholarship — acting scholarship for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors

Sam Wasson Scholarship — for students equally participating in technical theatre and performance

Annette Simons Scholarship — joint scholarship with Dance for students with significant presence in both departments
