Post-Enrollment Audition and Interview Requirements

No audition and interview is required for the initial application. The optional scholarship review (audition, interview, and portfolio) is separate from the internal audition and interview gate students complete after enrollment.Gateway source

Transfer Pathway

Linfield's block transfer policy can clear lower-division general education for qualifying associate-transfer degrees, giving BA/BS Music transfers a more direct path into musicianship, ensemble, applied lessons, and capstone planning. Music major requirements and the Major Standing Jury still require faculty advising.

What's The Process

Audition Process

No music audition is listed as a requirement for university admission or initial program entry

Optional music scholarship auditions are available for incoming first-year and transfer students; awards may be offered to majors, minors, and non-majors

Students first submit an application to Linfield, then complete the music scholarship application form to schedule an audition

Audition Expectations

Composition applicants submit samples of original music, with recording links and PDF scores if available, before the audition

Vocal and instrumental/piano applicants perform two prepared pieces in contrasting styles

Vocalists may choose art songs, arias, jazz standards, musical theatre songs, or similar repertoire

Instrumentalists play selections from different stylistic periods

Music faculty conduct a 10-minute interview; instrumentalists may play scales and sight-read, while vocalists may complete a note-recognition exercise

In-person auditions are encouraged for best scholarship consideration; virtual/video auditions may be discussed with the department

Post-Enrollment

Music majors must pass the Major Standing Jury before final admission to the music major

The jury includes performance in the primary applied area, an interview, and assessment of musical skills in the student's performance, creative, or scholarly focus
