Audition Process
•Bullet: Stage 1 is the online portfolio and personal statement through Acceptd; full details on how to access Acceptd are sent to you following your application
•Bullet: If you are successful in Stage 1, Leeds contacts you to invite you to a Stage 2 audition (the recall)
•Bullet: You can choose whether to attend the second stage in person or online; let Leeds know which when you confirm your attendance
Audition Expectations
•Bullet: Contrasting piece: based on your Round 1 submission, Leeds invites you to perform a contrasting piece and offers examples of appropriate Musical Theatre repertoire by email when arranging your audition
◦Sub-bullet: This can be on the piano or another instrument of your choice, and you play it without a singer
•Bullet: Coaching: you coach a singer or singer/instrumentalist in an informal workshop style; the singer/instrumentalist is one of the School of Drama undergraduate students
◦Sub-bullet: Leeds is interested in what you do with the piece (you can mix, arrange, strip back or present it as it is, or re-write it entirely) and how you work with the performer on the material 'in the room'
•Bullet: Sight-reading: a short bit of sight-reading with a singer, provided on the day
◦Sub-bullet: Leeds wants to see how comfortable you currently are with sight-reading, particularly as an accompanist, and your strategies for continuing through a new piece of music
•Bullet: The session ends with a chat about your needs and aims in applying, and a chance to ask any questions
•Bullet: Online: you coach the singer/instrumentalist as a soloist and sight-read alone; sheet music for both is sent by email immediately prior to your audition
•Bullet: Most musical directors play the piano, but Leeds accepts submissions from students who specialise in other instruments, including voice; the ability to use notated music is necessary to engage with the full range of the course
•Bullet: Leeds cannot give feedback to first-stage applicants because of the number of applicants; feedback at Stage 2 is built into the interview
