Prescreen Requirements

Monologues

Two Contrasting Speeches from Published Play Texts

Maximum two minutes per speech

Speeches should contrast in style, language, emotion, character, or tone

Classical verse (Shakespeare, Elizabethan, Jacobean, Greek) provides an immediate contrast with a modern play

Choose material that suits you and that you enjoy performing

Know the full source play, not just the excerpt

Introduce each speech at the beginning of the video or save the title and character in the file name

Material Selection

Choose a role you can imagine yourself playing

May use speeches from monologue books, but read the whole play for context

Self-written material may be submitted as an additional file, but two published-text speeches are still required

Perform in your native accent unless an accent is essential to the speech

All speeches must be fully memorised

A short, introductory video. Tell us who you are, where you're from, why you are applying to the course at Leeds Conservatoire and how you think the Acting course will serve your development

You are welcome to submit an optional fourth video demonstrating another aspect of your artistic practice that is not already represented in your audition materials but forms part of who you are as a performer and storyteller. This submission is entirely optional, and you will not be disadvantaged if you choose not to include one

Video Specifications

Recording Setup

Clear a space with a plain background if possible

Make sure you can be seen and heard throughout

Record each file individually and name descriptively (e.g., Introduction - Your Name)

Dress in loose-fitting, comfortable rehearsal clothes

Choose whether to direct performance to camera or to an off-camera point of focus, and be consistent

Focus on truthful, grounded acting rather than playing to camera

Application Logistics

Applications for 2027 entry (study starts September 2027) are made via UCAS Undergraduate (not UCAS Conservatoires)

UCAS Institution Code: L30

After Leeds processes your UCAS application you receive a Leeds Conservatoire ID Number and an invitation to Acceptd; submit your Round 1 materials there by the deadline in your invitation

Acting and Actor Musician: make one UCAS application for Actor Musician and state clearly in your Round 1 audition introduction that you wish to be considered for both courses

Acting and Musical Theatre: submit a separate UCAS application for each course

If you apply for more than one course, repeat the Acceptd process and submit materials separately for each course

Important Notes

Travel cost refunds available for in-person recall auditions

Eligible: UK residents from lower-income households (under 25,000 GBP) or Global Majority backgrounds

Leeds Conservatoire does not charge audition fees for undergraduate or postgraduate courses

What's The Process

Audition Process

Upload audition materials via Acceptd after receiving your Leeds Conservatoire ID Number

Invitation to submit is sent after UCAS application is processed

Optional fourth video: this might be, for example, instrumental performance, dance, singing spoken word or self-authored work that is central to your creative practice

Materials assessed by a panel

Successful applicants invited to Round 2 recall

Full-day event including group workshop, solo audition, interview, and campus tour

UK applicants attend in person at Leeds

International applicants attend a virtual recall via Microsoft Teams, working practically on their Round 1 monologues with a director

The panel completes the interview part of the recall in the same session

Group workshop features creative, ensemble-based activities

Solo audition: present Round 1 monologues with direction from panellists

Interview: questions about your interest, experience, and knowledge of acting

Decision communicated via UCAS: offer, waiting list, or rejection
