Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire

Two contrasting selections from the standard repertory, at the level of an all-state audition piece — show both lyrical and technical playing

Percussionists prepare snare drum (rudiments plus an all-state-level solo or etude) and a four-mallet marimba solo

Scales & Technique

Major scales and the chromatic scale, minimum two octaves (full range for brass)

Winds: twelve major scales and a chromatic scale (flute: 2-octave, or 3-octave if preferred)

Scales are followed by a provided sight-reading passage at the audition

Accompaniment

Staff accompanist provided on request — supply sheet music

Admission Pathway

School of Music acceptance by audition is required for music majors and minors

University admission and School of Music admission are separate decisions

Placement

Admitted students complete theory and aural-skills placement for course placement

Transfer Pathway

Lee publishes a Music AFA Tennessee Transfer Pathway; completed pathway coursework from Tennessee community colleges is guaranteed to transfer toward the Lee music major. School of Music audition and placement requirements still apply for this program.

Full Acceptance into the School of Music

Provisional Acceptance — re-audition required after one semester
