Scholarship Audition, Interview, and Portfolio Requirements

Optional audition, interview, and portfolio for scholarship consideration only; they are not required for program admission.

Monologues

Two Monologues

One dramatic, one light (comedic or romantic)

One from classical repertoire (Shakespeare, Moliere, etc.), preferably in verse

One modern (post-1875)

Preparation

Fully memorized and staged to include movement

Each monologue should not exceed two minutes

Shakespeare need only be about 20 lines of text

Additional Materials

Resume

Resume: include productions and the roles or capacities in which you participated

Resume: directing and stage management applicants may include run sheets, call sheets, or other production experience

Portfolio

Playwriting portfolio: upload an original manuscript of no more than 20 typed, paginated pages with your name on each page

Playwriting portfolio: collaborative work and AI-generated text are not permitted

Technical theatre portfolio: send a link to an electronic portfolio or production visuals such as designs, photographs, working drawings, or prompt books

Technical theatre portfolio: include relevant technical drawings or renderings and experience with specialized production equipment or software

Essay

Directing and stage management essay: write two pages about a play you directed or one you love

Essay prompt: directing applicants should explain how they approached or would approach the production

Essay prompt: stage management applicants should explain their contribution to the production's success

Optional arts scholarship audition/portfolio available (up to $8,000/year, renewable)

What's The Process

Scholarship Audition

Optional audition/portfolio for arts scholarship consideration (not required for admission)

Submit electronically via Knox application portal (apply.knox.edu) OR present in-person on campus

All students must schedule an interview with faculty after submitting materials

Faculty will reach out to schedule virtual interview, or schedule on-campus during visit

February 1 deadline for first-year students; email notifications sent February 16

May 15 deadline for transfer students (notification by June 1)

Interview

Required for all theatre scholarship submissions

Discuss acting process, monologue, resume, or portfolio

May be asked to re-do sections with new direction

Prepare thoughts on why theatre matters to you

Arts Scholarship

Up to $8,000/year, renewable annually with good academic standing

Theatre scholarships contingent on department participation for 6 of 12 terms

Scholarship recipients not guaranteed casting; all students have equal opportunities

Combination of Knox scholarships, grants, and federal/state grants cannot exceed cost of tuition

Additional need-based financial assistance may be available

Up to $500 travel reimbursement for in-person campus auditions
