TWO CONTRASTING ART SONGS OR ARIAS

One selection must be in a non-English language
Selections should demonstrate contrast in style and period

PLACEMENT TESTS (required)

Music theory placement test — determines theory and sight singing/ear training level
Piano placement test — determines class piano enrollment level
Music history placement test — optional, for students wishing to test out of music history/survey

APPLICATION PROCESS

Complete Kean University application via Common App or kean.edu
Schedule and complete audition separately through the Music Department

ENSEMBLE PARTICIPATION

Full-time music majors must participate in two ensembles each semester
Primary ensemble: Concert Choir
Secondary ensemble selected through advisement

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

Must perform in at least one student recital per semester
Jury examination required at the end of each semester

ENROLLMENT

Rolling admissions with April 30 priority deadline

What's The Process

AUDITION FORMAT

Live audition on voice — two contrasting art songs or arias, or online portfolio submission
Placement tests in music theory, piano, sight singing, rhythm skills, and optionally music history
Interview included as part of admission review
Audition must be completed before first-semester registration

ACCOMPANIMENT

Music department accompanist available for singers
Alternatively, you may bring your own accompanist
Notify the department when scheduling about your accompaniment choice

SCHEDULING

All in-person auditions held from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.
Additional appointments available by request
Bring an extra copy of your music for the adjudicator
