Audition Requirements

Repertoire List

Trumpet/cornet: a Grade 4-6 work showing technical and lyrical ability (two contrasting movements for multi-movement works)

French horn: any two-octave scales plus two contrasting solos or etudes (one slow, one fast)

Trombone, euphonium, tuba: two contrasting styles from etudes, solos, or a combination (etudes about 1-2 minutes; solos about 3-5 minutes)

Accompaniment

A staff accompanist can be provided for in-person auditions on request

Eligibility

University admission required before scheduling an audition

A satisfactory audition on the primary instrument is required for the BFA in Music Performance

Placement

Admitted students complete music theory and aural-skills placement at orientation for course placement only — it does not affect admission

Scholarships

All music majors are eligible for music scholarships determined by the audition

What's The Process

Audition Process

Step 1: Apply to IUP and be accepted academically

Step 2: Register for an on-campus audition via the IUP audition portal

Auditions are scheduled on multiple dates in the fall and spring semesters

Auditions take place in person

Piano Placement Test

Students with prior piano study complete a brief piano placement test as part of the audition

Play a few phrases of a memorized or notated piece, two white-key major scales (2 octaves, hands together), and sight-read a few bars of easy piano music

Piano majors and those with no piano background are exempt
