Audition Requirements

Repertoire

A prepared jazz etude, transcription, or substantial big-band chart (big-band chart accepted but not preferred), minimum 50 measures

Two contrasting-style jazz standards — perform the full melody (stylized individually) and improvise over several choruses, accompanied by backing tracks

No more than one of the two standards may be a 12- or 16-bar blues

Scales & Technique

Major and natural minor scales (two octaves whenever possible) in all 12 keys, in eighth notes at 120 bpm

Sight-Reading

Sight-read a short excerpt in swing, bossa nova, or funk style

Application Logistics

Apply to University of Iowa and indicate "Music (Interest)" as area of study

After university admission, complete the School of Music application via the MyUI portal

Select an Audition Day date through MyUI

February 1, 2027 — all undergraduate music applications must be submitted

For first-year university admission, Early Action is optional; Regular Admission is also available. Selecting Early Action is not what unlocks the MyUI Music application.

University acceptance is required before the Music application becomes available. Allow time for admission and complete the Music application by February 1, 2027; the university Regular Admission deadline on that same date does not guarantee access in time.

Admission Pathway

Admitted students complete an online music theory diagnostic and a piano proficiency exam at entry — for course placement only, not admission

Iowa's Music Transfer Tips state that admitted BA/BM music transfer students audition by instrument or voice, consult early with the School of Music, and may work toward total four-year completion using 1+3 or 2+2 planning. Transfer students must complete at least one year of applied lessons and major ensemble at Iowa.
