Good to Know

Application Logistics

Apply to University of Iowa and indicate "Music (Interest)" as area of study

After university admission, complete the School of Music application via the MyUI portal

February 1, 2027 — all undergraduate music applications must be submitted

For first-year university admission, Early Action is optional; Regular Admission is also available. Selecting Early Action is not what unlocks the MyUI Music application.

University acceptance is required before the Music application becomes available. Allow time for admission and complete the Music application by February 1, 2027; the university Regular Admission deadline on that same date does not guarantee access in time.

Admission Pathway

Choose between the Clinical and Performance tracks within the major

Earn a grade of C+ or higher in Orientation to Music Therapy (MUS:1687) to continue in music therapy coursework

Clinical observation begins in the junior/senior years, culminating in a six-month internship at an approved site

Admitted students complete an online music theory diagnostic and a piano proficiency exam at entry — for course placement only, not admission

Transfer Pathway

Iowa's Music Transfer Tips include Music Therapy majors, who must be admitted to a studio and take additional courses. Admitted music transfer students consult early for 1+3 or 2+2 planning and must complete at least one year of applied lessons and major ensemble at Iowa.
