Good to Know

Application Logistics

Apply to University of Iowa and indicate "Music (Interest)" as area of study

After university admission, complete the School of Music application via the MyUI portal

February 1, 2027 — all undergraduate music applications must be submitted

For first-year university admission, Early Action is optional; Regular Admission is also available. Selecting Early Action is not what unlocks the MyUI Music application.

University acceptance is required before the Music application becomes available. Allow time for admission and complete the Music application by February 1, 2027; the university Regular Admission deadline on that same date does not guarantee access in time.

Admission Pathway

Admitted students complete an online music theory diagnostic and a piano proficiency exam at entry — for course placement only, not admission

Transfer Pathway

Iowa's Music Transfer Tips state that admitted BA/BM music transfer students audition by instrument or voice, consult early with the School of Music, and may work toward total four-year completion using 1+3 or 2+2 planning. BM Composition applicants still complete the School of Music admission process and composition portfolio review.

Admission Process

Audition into a performance studio for admission to the School of Music (performance audition on your principal instrument or voice)

Submit a composition portfolio of at least three original works for review by the composition faculty

Complete a faculty interview covering general musical knowledge (form and repertoire), aural and sight-reading skills, and piano competency

Portfolio may be submitted in the first or second year to the area head

Decisions

Audition and scholarship results communicated by formal letter in early March
