Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Letter of Recommendation (Required)

At least one letter from a teacher or other professional familiar with your musical ability

Good to Know

School of Music Application

Separate School of Music application required via the online form in addition to the university application

Must be accepted unconditionally to Indiana State University prior to the audition

Audition Scheduling

Monday auditions begin at 4pm; Saturday auditions run mid-morning to mid-afternoon with tours and presentations

Auditions outside official dates may be arranged by contacting the School of Music office

Virtual auditions available only if absolutely necessary

Degree Structure

Combines a music core with the University's Foundational Studies program

Requires a declared minor in a non-music field (e.g., business administration, English, history, chemistry, legal studies, psychology, or communication)

Program Teach-Out

Indiana State will stop accepting new Music Liberal Arts majors after December 11, 2026

Students who enroll for Fall 2026 may still declare the major before the semester ends on December 11, 2026

The major will not be available to students entering Spring 2027 or later

What's The Process

Audition Process

Music Liberal Arts applicants complete the School of Music admission audition on their principal instrument or voice

Live on-campus audition strongly preferred; a recorded performance (mp3, video, or other digital media) is accepted for conditional admission when an in-person visit is not possible

Audition Requirements by Area

Voice — a classical solo performed from memory at the level of Group 1 (Indiana State Solo Contest List)

Strings — two contrasting solos, major scales in three octaves, and sight reading

Woodwind or Brass — a solo, major scales demonstrating range and articulation, and sight reading

Percussion — snare solo with rudiments (1-13), a mallet solo with major scales, proficiency in timpani/multiple percussion/drum set, and sight reading

Piano — repertoire per the School of Music piano audition guidelines

Theory & Sight Reading

At the audition, applicants complete a brief examination in rhythmic/melodic sight reading and music theory (major and minor key signatures) — used for placement, not a separate admission gate

Scholarship Info

Music Scholarships

Over $275,000 awarded annually across the School of Music

All music scholarships are performance-based

Apply to Indiana State University and be accepted before auditioning

Audition by April 1 for music performance scholarship consideration

Complete the general Branch scholarship application by March 1

Creative and Performing Arts Scholarships

$1,500 to $4,500 per semester, renewable for up to 4 years

20-30 incoming students receive a CPA Scholarship each year
