Songs

OPTIONAL SONG

•A song may replace one monologue or be added to the two monologues

•Song should be no longer than 1 minute or 16 bars

ACCOMPANIMENT

•Accompanist provided on DAA Day; send music in advance if possible

•Alternate-date singers must provide recorded accompaniment

•Recorded accompaniment must not include a vocal track

Monologues

DAA SCHOLARSHIP AUDITION, 5 min max

•Prepare two contrasting monologues, each no more than 2 minutes

•One monologue may be replaced with or supplemented by a song

•If you are not able to prepare two selections, one selection is acceptable

MATERIAL SELECTION

•Choose selections close to your own age and life experience

•Avoid extreme accents, dialects, gimmicky staging, props, and costumes

Resume

•Submit a theatrical resume with the DAA scholarship application

Portfolio (design/tech/stage management)

•Include designs, art work, production photos, prompt books, or related theatre work

•Recorded portfolio submissions should include at least 3 images

Recorded audition / interview (if not attending daa day)

•Actors submit an unlisted audition video link following live audition guidelines

•Directors and stage managers answer the department's filmed interview prompts

•Designers and technicians submit portfolio images instead of a performance audition

APPLICATION LOGISTICS

•Standard university application is required for admission

•Separate DAA scholarship application is required only for scholarship consideration

•Video audition links are submitted through the DAA application; YouTube/unlisted links are preferred

ENROLLMENT

•No program audition required to enroll in theatre courses or participate in the theatre program

•DAA recipients must major or minor in theatre

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

•Sophomore and junior majors complete annual student interview forms and meet with faculty

What's The Process

AUDITION PROCESS

•No audition required for admission to the BA Theatre program

•DAA scholarship audition/interview is optional and only for scholarship consideration

•DAA Day includes auditions or portfolio presentations, faculty interviews, workshops, and a performance

•Performance candidates present monologue and optional song material

•Design, technical theatre, and stage management candidates present portfolio materials

•All candidates have a faculty interview

•Alternate dates and recorded submissions are accepted by arrangement

AUDITION EXPECTATIONS

•Accompanist provided on DAA Day for students who sing

•Alternate-date singers provide recorded accompaniment

•Recorded submissions should follow the same performance or portfolio guidelines as the live review

•All candidates must visit campus by the published DAA deadline to be considered

Scholarship Info

DISTINGUISHED ARTIST AWARD (DAA)

•$3,000 per year ($12,000 over four years)

•Up to 60 DAA scholarships awarded annually across art, dance, music, theatre, and creative writing

•Open to incoming first-year and transfer students

•Recipients must major or minor in theatre

PERFORMANCE AUDITION

•Two contrasting monologues, each no more than 2 minutes

•One monologue may be replaced with or supplemented by a song (max 1 minute/16 bars)

•Accompanist provided on DAA Day; alternate dates require recorded accompaniment

•Total audition should be no more than 5 minutes
